St. Wenceslas Roman Catholic Church

God's house should be holy. We go there to worship God, period! We do not go there to be entertained. We also do not go there just to hear the message. When we go there, we should be out of this world.

When I am in an Orthodox temple, I know that I am in heaven, especially if everybody in the congregation is participating by singing the responses. The prayers united us to our brothers and sisters around the world and to our brothers and sisters in time.

Since I have friends who belong to St. Wenceslas, I have visited the church, especially since it is just a few blocks from my house. I am impressed by the interior and exterior of the building. Inside it is not an Orthodox temple, but it easily surpasses what I have seen in many other non-Orthodox churches.

Recently a neighbor told me that I should visit a particular church because they have a beautiful choir and the preacher is really good. I don't go to church to hear a great sermon, but to worship and praise God in a dignified manner. I also want the sermon to be based on the Scripture and teachings of the early fathers, the eye-witnesses of Jesus Christ and the Apostles.

When we have gatherings at various functions and it is time for prayer, I do not join in the prayer because I do not know what the person will say in his prayer. In an Orthodox church, I am confident that everything that is in the prayer is the teaching of the Church, not some personal belief of the individual. When I am asked to give a prayer or blessing, I use only the prayers of the Church.

Thank God that in Baltimore many of us believe very strongly in prayers and we would have Christian prayers at many non-religious functions. One priest friend observed that at white meetings business is conducted, but at black meetings, there is also prayer.
