Palm Sunday
On Palm Sunday 1956 I was baptized a Roman Catholic at the age of
ten. I received my "First Holy Communion" on Holy Thursday of that
same week. Fr. Charles Cremona baptized both me and my sister.
That year it was 25 March, but I selected to celebrate Palm Sunday
as my anniversary because of the closeness of Holy Thursday.
It was only when I moved to Baltimore that I realized that 25 March
is also Greek Independence Day.
We traditionally have at the end of the Liturgy a procession of
children carrying palms. I think that both the children and
the adults enjoy it.
Although I was baptized on Greek Independence Day, I do not
celebrate my baptism on that day. But today I do celebrate
Greek Independence Day when I can. As a military veteran I
understand very well our freedom. Today I frequently thank men
and women in uniform for protecting our freedom. In some
countries I would be jailed for wearing the Roman collar.
