Police Chaplaincy
The Baltimore City Police Department has been reaching out to the
faith based communities and is revamping their chaplaincy program.
LTC Melvin Russell is in charge of the program. He himself
is also a minister. He wants the churches to be involved in
solving issues in the City. He has proposed a forty-day
corporate fast, but the dates which he proposed are in conflict
with the traditions and practices of both the Orthodox Church and
the Catholic Church. Of course, this was not
intentional. Often Protestants, especially fundamentals, do
not understand the liturgical life and practices of the Orthodox
and Catholic Churches.
A major issue that was raised was the trauma that police officers
face. Most of us have no idea. We forget that they
also are human and have feelings. There are bad police
officers, of course, and we try to get rid of them. But most
police officers are trying to do a honest job.
