Police Chaplaincy Academy

Tuesday 10 March 2015

This is our third of five three-hour meetings.  City Council President visited us and thanked us for what we are doing.  He said that both the police and the citizens need us chaplains and he can't thank us enough.  It was gratifying to see the support from the City Council for what we are trying to do.

I was really happy to hear him say "I'm sick of marching.  Marching is just a facade for people to elevate themselves."  I concur.  I think that one of the problems that we have today is that we did the marching without the education.

Suzanne Sangree and Sharon Snyder from the Legal Affairs Office also talked with us.  They reminded us that we do have First Amendment rights and we are treated slightly different than mental health professionals.  Confidentiality was discussed.

We were really blessed to hear from Agent Gene Cassidy.  While attempting to make an arrest he was shot in the head by the suspect who is now serving life plus 20 years.  This incident has prompted some changes in procedures in the Police Department.

He told us that if we raise our hand in his class, it will become tired and we will become angry.  This was because he is blind.  He asked us, "What is a victim?"  He also asked us what does fear mean.  After he was shot, instead of retiring, he continued to work.  He went to school and earned a degree in U.S. History plus a minor in Psychology.  He earned a 3.4 GPA.  An oportunity arose for him to earn his masters degree in Management at Johns Hopkins University.  "Nobody is looking around for a blind truck driver."

He has season's tickets to the Ravens' game and he and his son go to every game.  He takes a radio with him and people tap him on the shoulder and ask "How many yards did he get?"
