Opportunity Collaborative Local Summit

CPHA along with Green & Health Homes Initiative held a local summit for East Baltimore.

I was asked to bless the food by David Skinner who does the outreach education. Steve Holt of CPHA is our host.

CPHA was established in 1941 and they work directly with community residents. We have a lot of great things going for us in Baltimore. What needs to happen to give people access to opportunities?

We had an exercise of matching with resources with people and needs.

Harriet brought up homelessness. In one school there are 772 students and 60 of them are homeless. Homelessness is a major problem in East Baltimore.

One group mentioned criminal records as a barrier. Another group wants more local businesses and a mall in the neighborhood. They also want a second chance for non-violent offenders.

Eli Knapp led the discussion opportunity in the Baltimore region. He does research at the University of Maryland. The big theme of our meeting tonight is opportunity. The National Center for Smart Government. 7194 is an opportunity map. 7195 are questions about which we need to think.

The questions are:

How do neighborhoods shape the opportunities available to people in our region?

What does opportunity mean to you?

What resources are needed to connect people in our communities to opportunity?

Think about these three questions and how they affect your neighborhood.  Maybe you need to do something to improve opportunities in your neighborhood, but you don't have to do it alone.

Nobody is supposed to be able to read 7196. It is just a measure of opportunities. 7196: Is opportunity all of these or a combination of these?

We are doing this for regional planning and the final regional planning will come out in early June and it will be online.
