Patterson Park AreaI still can't believe that I have such beautiful scenery one mile from whee I live and less than two miles from the Inner Harbor. For ten years I was only a bus ride away from the lake in this park and if I had known about it, I would had visited it more often.Patterson Park is a major park in East Baltimore. Many festivals take place here. I have attended the Ukrainian Festival many times. It used to be held at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church and then expanded to the Park. If my schedule permits, I do attend ethnic festivals that are free. Around the turn of the century I was working for Comcast in the Warehouse and over the weekend I was moving, but took time to go to the Greek Festival at St. Nicholas Church. A co-worker condemned me for attending the Greek Festival and not the African-American Heritage Festival. The previous year I made an appearance at the latter and saw nothing of interest for me. I always see something of interest at the Greek Festivals. I shared this experience with an older black man and he said that there was nothing for me at the AAHF and I concur with him. I also usually attend ArtScape and the Baltimore Book Festival. Of course I always attend the Russian Festival. When I can, I make it a point to get to the Greek Festival. Generally I can't get to the one at St. Demetrios since I do not have a car and MTA does not get me there, despite their ads which say "Oh, yeah, we go there." Another thing that I like about Patterson Park is that there is a Ukrainian Catholic church on the south side, a Roman Catholic church on the north side, and two Orthodox churches just a few blocks away on the west side. I have not been inside the Roman Catholic church, but I have served at both Orthodox churches. I was at one of them and told somebody "this used to be my church" and a woman from the parish happened to be there and she immediately said, "And this still is your parish!" |
