Eastern District Ride-along
For two years now I have been a community chaplain through the
Baltimore Police Department and one of my functions is to ride along
with police officers as they do their daily duties. This is a very
rewarding experience for me and I hope for the officers also. As a
result, I am a bridge between the police and the community and also
between the community and the police.
I rode with an officer who has done a lot of volunteering work with
children, immigrants, and Multiple Sclerosis. Our first call
was for a domestic in which the woman's boyfriend shot her in the
stomach with a BB gun. She gave us phony information on him so
the officer was not able to write a warrant for his arrest.
Another call was for a woman who did not want the police into her
apartment and she talked to us from the balcony.
Between the calls we were on the Fellsway and an elderly woman using
a walker needed to cross the street. The officer noticed this
and escorted her safely across the street. A man who worked in
the area thanked him for it. Most officers want to protect and
serve. Later another man expressed his sympathy to the officer
"for your loss," namely Detective Sean Suiter.
We also went to a school to have a police presence for
dismissal. I had a wonderful conversation with the security
officer there.
We also stopped by CUPs to grab a bite to eat. This very cute
restaurant is on Broadway, just a few blocks north of Johns Hopkins
Medical Center. |
