Prayer Walk
In Baltimore we are serious about turning the city around and we
know that we have to turn to God in order to do this.
In Baltimore City one frequently encounters a community walk or a
prayer walk. The difference is that in the second the
participants stop for prayers throughout the walk.
I have been participating in these activities last last
century. The criminal elements do not like it because it
disrupts their activities. It also tells them that people are
serious about their environment. During a community walk we
are ears and eyes of the police. In the Central District I
witnessed two arrests as a result. In one of them, an
individual had stolen a laptop earlier in the day and one of the
guys in our group pointed him out to the police who cornered him and
made the arrest. His girlfriend talked herself into an arrest.
Besides being on the look for criminal or suspicious activities, we
also look for quality of life issues.
When we gather in prayer, I do not join in the prayer itself, but
stand outside the circle and quietly say Orthodox prayers. I
do this because I do not know what is going to come out of the mouth
of the person saying the prayer.
