Southeastern District ride-along

Weekly I do a ride-along with the police. On Thursday 16 May there was not much.

On one day we had a landlord-tenant dispute.  The rent included utilities and the landlord wanted the tenant out of the house so he turned off the electricity and water.  This is illegal.  We needed to get a Spanish speaking officer to assist.  When we left, I did speak a little Spanish with the tenant and it was appreciated.  I can say a few things in Spanish.  I can read it considerably better than understand or speak it.  My background in Latin and French helps with reading.  This call was actually in the Eastern District.

There was a call for a landlord-tenant dispute in the Southeastern District when one couple attempted to evict another couple. Once somebody establishes a residence at a place, the landlord must go through the Court to evict the person.

The Baltimore Police Department wants people to do ride-alongs.  There are officers who do not like it, but most seems to favor it.  This way the citizens get a better idea of what really happens.  I often hear on the streets that the police want to arrest people or are always shooting people.  Most officers have never used their guns and they also do not want to arrest since that takes away your freedom.  Also, the system itself discourages making arrests.  Like you and me, an officer wants to go home at the end of the shift and not spend extra time doing paper work instead of being with his family.
