East Baltimore

There is a great deal of beauty and potential in East Baltimore. I spent Independence Day and the following day doing ride-alongs with the Baltimore Police Department.

On Independence Day we received a call about a break in or burglary. Apparently somebody forgot to lock the doors to a business and it was open all morning.  There was no sign of burglary nor theft.

One of the employees who assisted with our investigation remembered me from the Rose Street Community Center.  I would love to see more support for this center.  They help to keep our neighborhood clean.

On Friday things were slow, the way we want it.  We drove by Lafayette and Montford streets several time and I took some photos of the beautiful park that they created there.  Our black leaders need to invest in parks like this one and encourage the neighbors to become a showcase for the rest of the country.  It would be wonderful to see people in the parks like this and playing chess and expanding their minds.  They can probably also grow food.

Several officers with whom I talk would love to see more citizens doing a ride-along with them so that the average citizen can learn what really happens in a typical day.  The officers are there to protect and serve.  I have been doing this now for four years and I have never been in danger.  During this time I have seen less then ten arrests.  The point here is that police offices rarely arrest people and most of them have never used their guns. If you are arrested, chances are that you did something that require the officer to arrest you.  In other words, you did something for which he had no choice or you talked yourself into an arrest.

At church on the following Sunday Katherine told me that she loves the pictures of the park.  This encouraged me to post them here.
