National Nite Out

The first Tuesday of August is officially "National Nite Out."  However, this year we had to do it on Friday 9 August because of a fierce storm.  I was about to leave the house when the storm started and I decided that I was going nowhere.  From the time that I leave the house until I get to my destination, the only available shelter is the bus.

On Friday I did a ride-along with the Eastern District of the Baltimore Police Department. The officer and I were at the Northeast Market when a homicide threat came over the air.  We were on location at 11:47.  I counted ten officers ready to go into action and two of them were carrying rifles.  Traffic on Monument and Madison streets were diverted away from the action.

A woman motorist asked the officer what was happening and he said "active shooter" and she asked, "In the area?" She didn't hear my wise remark, "No, in Mississippi!"

Between 11:47 and 15:11 I followed our chaplains' policy":  "Get in.  Get out.  Engage."  Get in the car.  Get out of the car and engage the community.  One couple said that they were waiting for the bus, but they were not.  But I did engage them and I'm glad that I did.

A woman walked by and asked what was going on and somebody said something like a terrorist.  She said, "The police are going to shoot him."  I immediately replied, "If they are to shoot him, they would had done it by now!"

The situation finally ended with the suspect surrendering to the police.  Nobody was hurt.  I was then taken home since it was pass the end of the shift.

I took a nap and then checked my e-mail and saw that Washington Hill Mutual Homes were having the National Nite Out.  So I went there.

Because of the change of schedule, it was not as big as usually.  But it did give me an opportunity to interact with the neighbors of my church.  Some of them did not know that I belong to the church next door to the WHMH.

I took the bus to get to the event.  I wore my chaplain's uniform since this was also a police event.  However, the police were not present, probably because of the change of date and also, maybe they were not notified.  Plus there were other major events over the weekend.

After I left the event I went to the church to drop off something and Nadya took me home.  A cleaning crew was at the church at the time.  Much of the work done at my church is done by volunteers.
