Coat Drive

In 2012 I was attending AH100 and Professor Phillips told us about an incident in which he saw two guys released from prison on a very cold day and they had no coats and no bus fare.

That same year Assistant Warden Gwendolyn Oliver through a member of her staff approached the Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry for toys for a Christmas party.  On the day of the collection I was worried that we would not have enough toys.  We went over with four cars full of toys and the next day St. Andrew went over two more car loads.

Ms. Oliver was on vacation when we delivered the toys and she came in to receive them.  While we were unloading them, she told us the same thing that Professor Phillips told us.  This started the coat ministry.

As long as Ms. Oliver was the assistant warden in the Jail Industry building, we were collecting and delivering the coats.  But when she was moved to another building, we no longer had access.

However, in January 2019 Marty Masiuk arranged for us to deliver coats to Cenrtal Bookings.  I had some coats at home and Holy Apostles Church in Beltsville also donated coats. My coats came from Holy Trinity, Holy Cross, and other Orthodox churches.

I am hoping that we can expand this ministry and add to it bus fare to get the men and women home, especially if the weather is bad.
