ΑχιοςI Αχιος! Αχιος!

My birthday has become significant to Holy Cross Antiochian Orthodox Church. This year Deacon Timothy Barkley was ordained a priest. It was also on my birthday that Holy Cross held its first service, Great Vespers on Saturday evening. I helped to prepare the church for its first service and served as a subdeacon.

I did not do a ride-along with the police this week.  On this day I wanted to be sure to be on time for the ordination of Deacon Timothy Barkley to the holy priesthood.

I took the PK bus to Eutaw Street and walked two blocks to the Light Rail shuttle bus stop.  The Light Rail was not running south of North Avenue because of a water main breakage on Pratt Street.

Shortly after I got on the bus Paul called me to offer me a ride to the church.  I told him that I should be at Camden Yard in ten minutes.  Twenty minutes later I was only two blocks closer.  A major part of the problem was cars blocking the block.  ArtScape and a Baltimore Orioles baseball game were also part of the problem.

I got off the bus at the Royal Farms Arena and started to walk towards MLK when I noticed a bus traveling west on Lombard Street.  I walked to Lombard Street and took a bus and the driver let me off the bus at the intersection close to the garage where I needed to go.  Paul saw me as I approached the garage.

Just before I got on the last bus, Ken called me to make sure that I had a ride.

It was great actually meeting and getting to know him.  He's a medical doctor.  Many of my friends hold masters and doctorate degrees and many speak two or three different languages.  I am really blessed to be friends with these people.

After we arrived at the church, several people wished me Happy Birthday.

Immediately after I arrived, Bishop Thomas told me to vest.  I went into the sacristy and vested.  Deacon Justin came in and we met.  Deacon Peter also served.  We started the Liturgy with one bishop, three priests, and four deacons. Fr. Gregory is the pastor emeritus and now lives in North Carolina.  Fr. Joshua is the new pastor and Fr. David is the pastor of St. James.  He will also be moving to North Carolina and Fr. Timothy will take over his parish.

The Liturgy was beautiful.  I felt as if I were in heaven, both spiritually and physically.  Margaret did a fantastic job of reading the Epistle.

After the Liturgy we had a fantastic dinner in the church hall downstairs.  A friend from the 1970s came up to me.  It was really great seeing Vera.  She has been very special to me ever since she was four years old.

Recently I was criticized for using the term "Oriental" instead of "Asian."  I asked Doanh about it and she understands my position.  "Oriental" means East, as opposed to "Occidental" which means West.  I'm Eastern Orthodox and the Coptic and Ethiopian Churches are Oriental Orthodox, at least in English.  Both words mean the same thing.

Paul gave me a ride home.  It would had been a real problem getting home by public transportation because of the massive water main breakage.

I asked "Young One" if the term "Oriental" is offensive to her. I recently learned that politically correct people see the term as racist.
