Sunday of Orthodoxy Liturgy
We have completed the first week of Great Lent, the first week of the Fast. But we were given a very special treat during the Liturgy.
Before the Liturgy I asked Joseph to take photographs of the children choir who were singing today. I was not concerned about anything else, but when I ask somebody to take a photo, I have no problem if they photograph more than what I need since there is no more cost. My cost to take 100 pictures of an event is exactly the same as my cost to take 10 pictures. So why make a fuss over the number of pictures somebody takes?
Joseph photographed the service and the choir. The choir was not very happy about it, especially when the flash fired several times. But now we do have some phoatographic record of having a choir.
When the time came, the children choir assembled up front under the direction of teenager Vera Pastor. They were good!!! Vera will be an excellent choir director one day.
At the end of the service we had the Sunday of Orthodoxy procession. Icons are very important to Orthodox Christians. In many places they were also teaching tools. People who could not read words could read icons. The Fathers of the Church debated over the use of icons in the fourth century and concluded that it is proper to venerate them because we are honoring, not that piece of wood, but the person who is depicted in the icon. Today many of us kiss photographs of loved ones and think nothing of it. So why can't we do the same in the Church, which should be our homes? We also know from experience that somehow the honor that we pay to the saints are appreciated by them. |
